We had seven Grandkids take steers from Little Bitterroot Ranch this year. Four were from our herd and three were from our son Shannon’s herd. Four of the grandchildren live in Ravalli County. Sadly because of Covid, their fair was canceled, but through cooperation of leaders and others the Freedom Show was offered at a ranch outside of Stevensville. At least the grands got to complete their projects by showing their steers and selling them. Much to our surprise in October we received a 2020 Steer of Merit Award in the mail for Taylor’s steer! We didn’t get results from the other three Ravalli County steers as they went to different slaughter plants and were not carcass evaluated.
Sanders’ County Fair, our local fair, did go ahead and have the 4-H portion only of our fair. Our other three grandchildren showed there, with some good live market as well as carcass results. Aubrey’s steer placed fourth live and second in carcass, just missing Steer of Merit by one point because of cutability. Mackenzie’s steer placed third live and seventh in carcass. Marina, our youngest Grandchild, placed tenth live and fourth in carcass. Our herd sire, LBR Top Cut 305, was the sire to Taylor, Aubrey, Mackenzie, and Hailey’s steers. His data shows he is third generation in high marbling. His progeny continue on with this trait as shown with the steers our Grandkids took out of him.
